FarmOps Shortlisted for the Innovation Arena at National Ploughing Championships 2023

Munster Bovine is delighted to announce that our FarmOps Cow Breeding Decisions innovation has been shortlisted for the Enterprise Ireland Innovation Arena at the National Ploughing Championships in Ratheniska, Co. Laois from Tuesday 19th – Thursday 21st of September 2023!

Selecting the right cows to breed from is as important as bull selection to increase profitability. In an increasingly regulated and discerning market, farmers breeding decisions will determine the long-term sustainability of the value stream of Irish agrifood business.

Farms are awash with complex individual cow data and there is a challenge to access, convert and interpret data to make effective breeding decisions.

FarmOps Cow Breeding Decisions innovation bundles milk recording and genetic data, reproductive history, and health status, and by using a sophisticated within herd ranking, generates a comprehensive user-friendly visualisation of each cows’ performance. Then, the farmer can use this tool to decide which cows are suitable to generate replacements from using sexed or conventional semen and which cows should be bred to high Dairy Beef Index bulls generating beef calves of value.

As each cow breeding decision is made, the decision is stored as part of the cow record. On breeding day, the farmer can access the information on phone and know exactly what insemination should be used for each cow.

The first generation of this innovation is built and in UAT environment ready to demonstrate to farmers at the Ploughing. The Munster Bovine FarmOps team are hopeful that this will be available to farmers ahead of Breeding season 2024.

Martin Kavanagh – Sustainability and Business Development Manager with Munster Bovine commented on this recent achievement. “FarmOps Cow Breeding Decisions module is a culmination of a wealth of animal information that is available within the app and bring this information together in one place to allow farmers to identify cows suitable for conventional, sexed or dairy beef semen. This is a game changer in terms of enabling herd owners to make the right breeding decisions and takes the hassle out of what is traditionally a very busy time on farms. We are very excited to see the impact of this innovation in the coming months and look forward to meeting our customers at the ploughing to demonstrate it fully.”

A huge congratulations to all of the FarmOps team!
